Review: SOGO Causeway Bay – Japan's Massive Department Store in the Heart of Hong Kong
I popped into SOGO Causeway Bay a few times on my trip and was absolutely gobsmacked by the sheer size of this beast. Hop off at Causeway Bay MTR station, head up Exit D, and bam – you're straight into the basement levels. Super quick and handy, just like that local Vietnamese guide reckoned.
First impressions? Tall, massive, and packed to the rafters. This place sprawls across 20–21 levels, with each floor dedicated to different goodies – think fashion, shoes, beauty products, homewares, a massive supermarket, and heaps of food options. It's chockers with big-name brands, especially Japanese and international ones. If you're into that classic Japanese department store vibe but want it in a mega skyscraper smack bang in Hong Kong, this is your dream spot.
My fave part? The food and café scene inside:
Hit up UCC Coffee Shop on Level 4 for a proper Japanese brekkie spot – perfect for kicking back with a coffee and a light bite.
Down below, Donq bakery's got Japanese-style pastries that look so tempting, you'll struggle to walk past without grabbing one.
Plus, there's a supermarket right in the heart of SOGO with fresh food sections and takeaway grub that's spotless and beautifully displayed – pure Japanese department store magic.
The downside? It's bloody crowded. As one review nailed it: "huge, spacious, endless stuff, but chockers with people." High noon or weekends mean a bit of elbowing, but everything's super organised with escalators everywhere and clear signage. Just keep an eye on the levels and you'll find what you're after.
For me, SOGO Causeway Bay is ace for:
- Scoring Japanese brands, cosmetics, clothes, and shoes in a traditional department store setup.
- Ducking in from the sun or rain, knocking over some shopping, and grabbing a quick feed while you're in Causeway Bay.
- Pairing it with Times Square in one epic mall marathon if you can happily live in shopping centres all day.
